Finally: some moth news

A warmer and cloudier night last night looked promising for some moth activity. At 5.30 I visited the garden trap and was "happy" to discover 13 moths of  10 species. Hardly a record, but my first double figure garden haul since 22nd May! Last year on this day I took 26 moths of 23 species, showing just how poor 2015 has been so far.
A tawny marbled carpet was the only new for year moth, with regulars such as common pug, white ermine, brimstone and spectacle also found.
Micros were represented by Nematopogon swammerdamella (2nd garden record) and Tinea semifulvella, also 2nd garden record.

This takes my total moths trapped in 2015 to 319, compared to 2.06.14 when it was 593.
Comparisons: 2014 02.06.14 = 84 macros
                       2015 02.06.15 = 47 macros

                       2014: 02.06.14 = 22 micros
                       2015: 02.06.15= 25 micros but 5 have been taken on visits to other areas of the parish!

About Me

My photo
A primary school teacher for 30 years, I retired from teaching in July 2009 to set up my own science enhancement and communication company. The Primary Works offers science clubs, workshops and staged science shows nationwide. I have always been interested in bird watching since my early years. Apparently my first tick was after inquiring about a chaffinch and then receiving the Observer book of birds. By the age of 9 I had moved on to Tory Peterson's collins guide and was now involved on YOC birding holidays to Northumbria, Essex coast, Slimbridge and Yorkshire. My twitching rule is that I will willingly travel 1km for each gram the bird weighs. However, I have had many rarities just by being in the right place. I have travelled widely throughout Europe and also visited Australia and Sri Lanka. In 2016 I spent time at Portland Bird Obs and two trips to Aviero, Portugal. 2017 found me back in Sri Lanka in Feb/March, then July and back for New Year's Eve celebrations in December. Also returned to The Camargue in May for a 4 day trip. Few plans for 2018, but nothing yet booked apart from a trip to the IOW.
