Wednesday Activity

Morning All,
A little late on parade today. Lured more Emperor moths to the garden yesterday and needed to get photos of them as soon as possible to release them promptly.

Just a few reminders to prepare for forthcoming activities coming up over the next few weeks.
  1.  Save all yogurt type pots
  2. Keep some tins from chopped tomatoes and baked beans. Perhaps put some sellotape or electrical tape around the top if it is sharp and jagged.
  3.  Place a pile of vegetable and fruit left overs eg carrot and potato peelings, apple cores, orange peel, squash seed pieces etc in a Tupperware pot or yogurt pot and place some where in the garden and mix in small pieces of cardboard and newspaper.
  4.  Place a large stone, paving slab or old piece of carpet somewhere flat in the garden. Maybe an unused corner or under a tree where you won't damage the grass too much. We'll come back to this one in a fortnight but worth setting up now.

Todays Activity:

Today, I am interested in birds flying over your house and garden. First find out which way is North, South East and West. Probably a compass on your phone to find this out. Draw a cross on a piece of A4 paper and mark the 4 points of the compass on it. Spend half an hour (or more) watching the sky and plot on to the paper the direction of each bird that flies over. If you want to use NE, NW, SE, SW then that would be even better.
It doesn't matter if you don't know the bird species but I suspect most will be members of the crow family and wood pigeons. If you do know them, label them as such but this is not the main part of the activity. Please, please do send me your results. I wonder if there is a prevailing direction at this time of year? We could turn this into a scientific experiment and I would be really keen to see your results.

These are all the Emperors I caught yesterday. Also in the garden I had a peacock butterfly and this tiny, less than 1mm long beetle. A Pea weevil. Splendid little chap just popped on to a wooden flower box as I was having lunch!

Have another super day, the temperatures are supposed to be quite impressive. If anyone has activities to do with nature, please do let me know and I can include your suggestions in future messages. Enjoy the weather.
Cheers,
Jono
