An hour at the trap last night, with a return at 5.30a.m. paid dividends as several new species were observed. A dusky sallow (photo 1) was a new garden record whilst browntail, ghost swift (2) and green carpet (3) were new for the year. Micros were represented by 7 mother of pearl(4) whilst Evergestis forficalis, Garden pebble (5) was new for 2012. Just to indicate some of the complexities of micro lepidoptery I attach a bird cherry ermine Ypnonmeuta evonymella (6), a presumed apple ermine, Yponomeuta malinellus (7) and yesterday's Yponomeuta plumbella (8) each less than 2cm long!
Finally, a real pest species, the horse chestnut leaf miner, Cameraria ohridella. This is the moth responsible for the blotches on conker tree leaves. First discovered in the 1970's and established as a new species in 1986. Now probably on every horse chestnut tree in the south of England and mainland Europe. All of 8mm long.
