At last 02.05.12

After a whole month of cold and what seemed to be like wet nights last night was both a little warmer and remained dry for most of the night. This gave rise to a new moth for the year visiting the trap: namely a brimstone moth. The 5th most common moth in Hertfordshire it was nevertheless a colourful addition to the now familiar brown and tawny coloured quakers, hebrew characters and clouded drabs. Photo of the creature here, along with a photo of a moorhen taken whilst wandering around Hadham Hall on Monday morning. Along with this, notable birds were linnets, tufted duck and common buzzard. The resident barn owl, whilst not visible is still roosting in its tree hole as I picked up 14 pellets to use in the local primary school.
